A chef, an artist, a scientist make an award-winning gin on the Cornish coast.

Meet Loveday, a multi award winning Cornish distillery creating modern spirits with fresh and foraged botanicals. They supply The Idle Rocks with gin, and also have organic, made from scratch rum resting in oak barrels which will be ready to head out the door in the spring of 2023

Loveday is Daisy the chef turned head distiller, Chloe is the design department and Ruth is the scientist turned salesperson.

Chloe and Daisy grew up together in Cornwall and Ruth quite literally sailed into their lives from Wales in 2013 when she was deckhand on a friend’s boat.

Daisy had previously headed up a hugely popular garden cafe in Cornwall after cutting her teeth at Le Cordon Bleu and in fine dining restaurants.

Chloe brings to the party a decade of cooking and hospitality experience, alongside a background in art and design.

Ruth had worked in production science at Cadbury, Heineken and St. Austell Brewery. Her extensive experience in alcohol production, commercial quality control, and all things spreadsheets rather nicely compliments Chloe and Daisy’s practical experience in making things that taste delicious.

The idea of working together to create a distillery had been brewing with Ruth, Daisy and Chloe for some time, and as it happens, the upheaval of lockdown during the summer madness that was 2020 was just what needed to galvanise them into action.

Together they create spirits with a meticulous eye on craftmanship,  vibrant, utterly delicious flavours using fresh and foraged ingredients, inspired by the sea and landscape around us.

Daisy’s Favourite Gin Cocktail

My favourite of the Loveday gins is the Falmouth Dry as it’s so complex and savoury, with  a smooth dry base, mouthfeel from the fennel and a wonderful salinity from the rock samphire. I like to drink it in a simple dirty martini using perello olives as they are in the most delicious brine.

75ml Loveday Falmouth Dry Gin

25ml Perello Olive Brine

25ml White Dry Vermouth

An olive and a strip of lemon zest to garnish

Shake the first three ingredients with plenty of ice, strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with the olive and lemon zest.
